Just concluded a 20 turn air battle, in which 6 RAF P40E Kittyhawks jump 12 Stukas in a
defensive circle escorted by 4 Bf 109Fs. The Stukas survived with some damage even
though the circle was broken up and the 109s inflicted heavy losses on the P40s, shooting
down three for no losses. Combat summary below, more or less outlines the scenario
results.
======
Here is a summary of the player's efforts
Stukas
The Stuka crews showed discipline but remained in a defensive mind set and took no
offensive shots even though some opportunities presented themselves as P40s overshot
their flights. Defensive gunners were active early in the game during the initial attack and
toward the end. 11 defensive shots (some were group shots) were taken during game
turns 3, 4, 5 and 10. The light guns were fairly ineffective though inflicting only one point
of damage - that to P40-2.
109 Escort
The escort, lead by veteran pilots was very effective, coordinating their passes with the
needs of different Stuka flights coming under attack. Three P40s were shot down and one
of the remaining three was lightly damaged during the battle.
109-1 took 5 shots in a sustained attack over turns 7 to 11 - all against P40-3 which
suffered 8 hits and 3 crits one of which snapped off one of the Warhawk's wings for a kill.
4 shots hit, 1 missed. Accuracy 80 percent.
109-2 took 2 shots - one at range 0 on turn 5 which blasted P40-2 out of the air with 14
hits for a one shot/one kill pass. On turn 12 he nicked P40-1 for one point. In play, he
took two shots for two hits. Accuracy 100 percent.
109-3 took only one shot at P40-4 which occured on turn 10 which scored, inflicting 6
hits and 3 crits, one of which shot out the P40's control cables resulting in another one
shot / one kill. Accuracy 100 percent.
109-4 traded head on fire with P40-1 on turn 5 and missed. He then pursued and
continued to attack this P40 but missed three additional shots over the game, all of which
were low odds, high angle shots. 4 shots / 4 misses = Accuracy 0 percent.
109 total claims - three kills confirmed, one P40 damaged.
P-40E attackers
The P40 pilots had the bounce at the start, but overall, a less experienced set of pilots with
two green pilots in their ranks. Their attack was generally ineffective, lacking cohesiveness
and direction. Spooked by the 109s, the P40 pilots failed to concentrate on any single
Stuka kette and almost from the start wasted time trying to fence with the 109s. By the
time an attack finally coalesced against Kette no. 4 (Stukas 10-12), the 109s were in
position to break up that effort, though not before Stuka 11 took some serious damage.
The lack of team work and the every-man-for-himself attack by the RAF was its undoing
resulting in three losses for no kills.
P40-1 took two shots, both early in the game against 109s at high angles. He hit 109-1
for 2 points on turn 4, then 109-4 for 1 point on turn 5. After that he was out of position
to initiate further attacks due to a vertical reposition that took excessive time. This was
motivated by being pursued by 109s 3 and 4 for much of this time. Two shots for two hits
= 100 percent accuracy, two 109s claimed damaged.
P40-2 had Stukas on his brain and damaged one each in Kettes two and three before
being blindsided by 109-2 and blown out of the air. He damaged Stuka 4 and Stuka 7.
two shots for two hits = 100 percent accuracy, two Stukas claimed damaged, own aircraft
abandoned for camel transport back to base.
P40-3 tried to press the Stukas as well, hitting no. 7 and missing no. 1 later in the game.
Unfortunately, he got slow maneuvering and 109-1 saddled in for a sustained attack that
shot the P40 down. Two shots, one hit - 50 percent accuracy, one stuka damaged, own
aircraft disabled. Parachuted down then hitched ride on back of SAS desert rat jeep.
P40-4 this ace was slow getting into the action, pursuing and finally inflicting heavy hits
on Stuka 11 around turn 8, but then broke off that attack to go to the aid of P40-3 who
had 109-1 locked on his tail. He fired at long range at 109-1 missing twice but,
Unfortunately, he was sniped out of the air by 109-3 before he could close to effective
range. Three shots, one hit, accuracy = 33.3 percent. One Stuka damaged, then own plane
disabled. Used parachute then stole bicycle from Libyan child and pedaled back to base.
P40-5 was aggressive but unfocused, switching targets repeatedly. He fired once at air,
twice at Stuka 11 then Stuka 10, then finally at 109-4. He damaged Stuka 11 with a hard
hit but missed all other shots. 5 shots for 1 hit = 20 percent accuracy. One Stuka
damaged. P40-5 was not damaged.
P40-6 a green pilot on first mission (but not a green player) was largely neutralized by the
109 escort which took turns pointing in his direction and pursuing him. The P40 was able
to evade all passes, none of which resulted in shots but also never achieved a position to
take any shots himself. No shots, no claims, no accuracy rating.

Comment - game demonstrates superior killing power of cannon armament as two P40
kills were result of critical hits. The 109 cannons created more critical hits than the P40
machine guns.
