I only had about 15 minutes worth of Monsterpocalypse demo. I can give you the highlights though.

The game is surprisingly deep. It looks light, but it's not.

The basic idea is that it's a last monster standing game. Last one with a unit left alive wins.

The main resource of the game is dice. You'll see the special dice in the pics. Each of the stars represent successes. You need a specific number of successes to hit your opponents (how many depends on who you attack). You also use the dice to activate units. So the more guys that you activate, the fewer dice you have to attack and such. It's a really interesting mechanic. The big monsters work from a different dice pool than the little guys. There's also a third pool of Power Dice that you can collect by occupying specific areas of the map as well as siphoning them from building (slowly, by standing near them, or more quickly by just leveling them).

As you might expect from Privateer Press, there's a lot of complementary abilities that you can use to make an army more than just the sum of its parts. The little lizard guys had a special lizard guy that you could use to bump up the abilities of his allies.

The monsters are obviously the showcase of the game. the neat thing about them is that while they come pre-packaged with the ability to level buildings and do significant damage to their enemies, you can also use those power dice that you collect to power them up. Each monster has something of an uber-form that they can transform into, giving them new powers. You can maintain that form by paying more power dice in subsequent turns.

I really didn't have time to get a full look at what the game had to offer but it was clear that it was going to be pretty fast and fun, and yet not a particularly light game. I was expecting something targeted at the Pokemon/YuGiOh crowd and what we're getting is something that gamers will be able to sink their teeth into.

It's also clear that the game isn't done yet. The guys in the booth were discussing abilities that they'd like to add to one of the monsters that doesn't yet exist – which leads me to believe that this one isn't completely nailed down yet.

I've had a peek at the rules and the dice pools really are at the heart of things. Essentially you have two pools -- one for your big guy, and one for everyone else. When you roll the dice out of one pool, they go into the other. So, you can alternate turns between your big guy and the little guys, but you'll come up short if you want to move the same class of units two turns in a row. On the other hand, keeping dice balanced between the two pools means you're never pushing either class of units to their limit, and you could be vulnerable to a player who know when to go for it.

In addition to managing your dice pool, there's some light resource harvesting in that you get bonuses for knocking down buildings and holding spawn points. There is a big decision point to make about when to swap out your big guy for his "hyper" form, as while the hyper is an overall upgrade from the monster's base form, there are also some drawbacks and vulnerabilities. And of course there is the meta-game about synergies between different factions and powers ... in this regard the game seems a bit like a second-generation Warmachine, which was itself heavily influenced by similar play patterns in collectable card games.

The figures look terrific in person -- the photos I've seen so far (including my own) don't really do them justice. Something else I noticed about the set at the con is that the buildings are really neat -- some of them have semitransparent windows, which enhances the feeling of a model city.

I hope this game takes off. So far I really like what I see, and it would nice to have a game the kids could play with their old man on weeknights, and with the community in weekend tournaments.
